Do Better Scholarship

Do Better Scholarship is a $500 stipend that will be used to promote and achieve a level of greater family connectivity.

There are times when a parent might be so distracted by their own inner world, that they’re simply incapable of noticing the impact of their actions, decisions, and/or behavior on their children. The Do Better Scholarship challenges and holds parents accountable for the negative choices they make, that can cause a negative impact on their children. Parents influence their child’s social skills directly, indirectly and through management of their child’s activities. Parents should be aware that not only do their own emotions and parenting style affect the emotional outcome of their children, but if they are not aware of how their children’s temper affects them, they could fall into a spiral of ineffective and indifferent parenting which further contributes to negative behaviors.

Children do inherit some traits from their parents, but parents contribute to the environment that the child is raised in, and can have a healthy influence on  intelligence and personality by the way they interact with the child. As the child grows, they prepare him or her for life as an adult either directly or indirectly. Although there is a cultural standard that most parents follow in parenting, the ultimate effect on the child is dependent on parenting style. Parent styles can differ significantly from one family to another.

There is no accountability for parents, despite their crucial role in their children’s success. I’m not saying that parents should be held responsible for their child’s behavior, but held accountable for assisting in the misbehavior due to learned behavior.

The Do Better Scholarship provides opportunities and positive outlook parents who were or are currently involved with the Criminal Justice System, or have/had a substance abuse issue. The scholarship rewards them for achieving a level of competence in regards to effective parenting, by displaying appropriate conduct, making better decisions, and becoming a positive role model for their children. The Do Better Scholarship fortifies family relationships, fills the parent with gratitude and good will, and triggers a positive repetitive cycle of good behavior that will ultimately benefit the family. Parental involvement matters, and it is extremely essential in creating change in a harmful environment, and we should hold up positive examples of change, and encourage them to encourage others to follow in their example.
